'Wonders of Life' single reviews

Man this is good work. Ive sat here trying find anything that I could point out, but nothing.Your lady singer is awsome, and so are the musicians. Peace-Cisco Delaware-USA

I'll get right to the point. That kicked my ass all over the living room!!!! Please let me know when I can buy the cd. eddie, Carrollton, GA.

Boy, this thing sounds like it's right off the Pro shelf.
Writing, arrangement, performance, recording, mixing and production are unbelievable! This track isn't close to pro, IT IS PRO. Don't agree? Clean your ears and take another listen. This surpasses anything I've done as far as a live band goes so I gotta know. Johnny / SG Recording Studios

Cool tune. I always was a Soul fan. I like the words a lot. Good message in such a dark time. tom

Wow! Great sound. I love the drums. Horaay!! Real drums. A drummer with a pulse. Which one are you?Nice tight horns. Vocals are right there.Sounds great - even over broadband streaming on my laptop's tiny speaker. Laura Tyson

Absolutely killer recording. Great vocal, exceptional drum work (nice groove). Everything sounds truly pro to my ears. I am also getting that buzzing sound in the intro as well as other parts up until about half way through the tune, then it quits. It does sound like a kazoo to me as well. Then again I'm listening on cheap computer speakers as well and it may just be a frequency thing. If music didn't hear it on his system then it may be mine/ours. Erv

Great stuff! I especially love the panned harmonies. Nice tight funky drums. I always been a big fan of that. Very interesting panning throughout. Very cool and unique stuff man. Awsome! Brian

...with a lot of funk, but also some rock elements, this Dutch 7-piece band managed very well to entertain the audience with their 'groove'! The visual look of the band on stage itself was a beautiful sight.........

...The renewed Mendoza (new drummers and vocalist)confirms their top position in the Dutch Jazzdance-scene because they give evolution a chance!....

...after listening (and watching!) this CD we can't draw any other conclusion: 'This Life' is simply (well, actually that is not so simple at all!) a very nice, funky and groovy record, that belongs to be be played in all music lovers' audio or multimedia equipment!...

*review in newspaper 'Brabants Dagblad' (read in Dutch)

....the CD 'This Life' sounds like how funk-jazz should sound like in the year 2000! With their roots in the 70-ies soul, the first funk-jazz influences, hiphop, drumnbass and lots of dance this remarkable 7 piece group analyses this popular young people orientated music style. This gives more space to details but also some unexpected surprises!...

....the album is a virtuose mix of funk, jazz, soul en disco..the album has a jazzy touch with vocalist Linda Bloemhard adding the right flavour...

*review in musicians magazine Muziekwereld', july 2000 (read in Dutch)

...MDP has evolved from jazzdance to a modern mix of funk, jazz, dance, triphop and disco. The album opener 'I can See You' is sleazy funky and cool, vocalist Linda Bloemhard talksings nice and sensual on top. In 'Baby and I' guitarist Theo Holsheimer shows a very special space-solo and the nice horn arrangements on the album take care of the true funkfeel. The albums sounds very good......

*review in magazine Pleasure (read in Dutch)

....with this 4th album its like a groovy and trippin'! Hypnothizing sounds with clear screaming vocals!...

*review in popmagazine LiveXS (read in Dutch)

....This Life is a strongly produced and massive groovin' funk record. The vocals remind me of Beeswamp (no shame in that), in the sound of the rest of the band is more disco, with some trendy drum 'n' bass-crossover. The additional mp3's on the album show that the band live on stage funks even harder. The ballads are somehow predictable and soft, but the uptempo u songs really rock and are in the majority...

* reviews on the web about single 'Baby and I'

*My baby and I on the web is really cool. I like the beat frenzy underneath funky vocals. Great style, and very original. And they win the Coolest-Record-Label-Name Award: Phunky Pheasant?! lol-- that rocks!

*head popping/toe tapping music. The vocals were very jazzy and the blend fo jazz and funk is very good together.

*Dense with ideas; lots of unresolved chords over a tight trance groove; couldn't stop replaying it...

Heineken Crossover Award Jury Report 1999
(
about the band on stage with the new repertoire)

Strazz Jazz Compilation / Poufff

*review in music magazine 'the mix' july 1994, UK)

It should be no surprise to hear an act of this callibre emerge from Amsterdam. It's long been one of Europe's more sophisticated capitals. Others may be assimilating funk into rap or rave, but the Mendoza's colours are nailed to a traditionalist mast. In the wrong hands this can get routine, but on top of the virtuosity, there is real energy here. No wonder they refreshed enough parts to win the Heineken Audience Award.

'Theo's bedroom' may have its acoustic deficiencies, but it lends the material a raw ambience. Oddball raps and financial news segues are a further tease. The sax of 'Mendocity' is pure Maceo Parker while Theo's guitar work on 'What's Up' recalls Wes Montgomery or a young George Benson. Only the bassline are contemporary, but it's tasty juxtaposition. In the tussle for Mr Brown's crown, the Mendoza have shot straight into the super-league.
